Founded in 1890 early records show that Sutton was a favoured venue for golfers from the earliest days. The fact that the railway stopped at Sutton was a major bonus. The club quickly established itself and a first Irish senior international Averell Digges La Touche, was celebrated in 1904. A first interclub victory, the winning of the Junior Cup was to follow in 1906.

Almost from the outset the club has had a strong women’s section and this was reflected in 1911 when both Rhoda and Georgina Lauder were both selected for the Irish Women’s Senior International team - the first ever sisters to play for Ireland.

Undoubtedly the golden age for Sutton began in 1946 with the winning of the Barton Shield. From 1946 to 1963 Sutton was by far the dominant club in Ireland winning 9 All Ireland titles and a further 26 Leinster titles - a phenomenal achievement. During that time the
club featured consistently on the Irish international team - on one occasion providing three members of that team.

It was also during this time that Sutton’s most famous player came to dominate the headlines winning a stunning 40 major titles over a 28 year period ; playing for Ireland 147 times ; and appearing on 10 Walker Cup teams. He also became the first Irish golfer to play in the Masters which he did on
three occasions. His greatest achievement however was winning The Amateur on three occasions. (The Amateur was for many years part of golf’s Grand Slam.)

Finally he was inducted into golf’s “Hall of Fame”, again the first Irish man to win this award. Fittingly it was his friend Jack Nicklaus who read the citation.

It is difficult to over estimate the impact Joe Carr had on golf on a world stage. He was described by a famous golf writer as “The Finest Amateur of his Generation”.

In relation to the course itself undoubtedly the biggest change was the acquisition of Connor’s Field, the land across the railway line. This provided the opportunity to create three new holes in the “Field” and to open up the existing land to create better and more challenging holes. The initial layout of Connor’s Field lasted until 1996 when the opportunity presented itself to redesign these holes and to fully realise the course that is played on today.

Over the years Sutton has had three clubhouses the third of which was officially opened in 2001. It is a wonderful clubhouse that makes the most of the stunning location of the golf club. A fitting addition to a club and course that has played a major role in the history of golf in Ireland.
