        SUTTON GOLF CLUB
        LEGENDS

The history of Sutton Golf Club is built on the work of generations of our members who collectively have guided the club through the good times and the bad. As is the case with most people who volunteer in sports organisations, they would be the first to downplay their inputs. However, we must recognise that, without their great work the reality is in all probability there might not be a Sutton Golf Club today and it certainly would not be the thriving entity it is today. We, the present members, salute them all - total legends.

However there are a small number we must mention, in some cases for their exploits, which have brought great honour to the club; in other cases for their standout work with in the club.
        Picture
        JB Carr
One of Irish sport’s true superstars, who lived up to that term before the term was invented. An amateur all his life, his commitment to Sutton Golf Club was absolute. He combined golf with a stellar business career and was justifiably recognised with a series of awards including induction into golf’s Hall of Fame; the Bobby Jones Award for his contribution to the sport ; captaincy of the R&A; three times captain of Sutton; honorary membership of countless golf club ; and a legacy that will live forever.
        Picture
        Roddy Carr
One of JB’s sons who also went on to play for Ireland on multiple occasions, and who also played on the winning GB&I team in the 1971 Walker Cup. Like his father before him, Roddy also captured both the East and the West of Ireland amateur titles . He turned professional after his Walker Cup triumph and played for over 10 years on the European Tour, before turning to the business of golf where his many roles included managing the great Seve Ballesteros. Since then Roddy has been involved in the development of many golf courses around the world

        John Carr
Another of JB’s sons John also had a successful amateur career in golf, achieving representative honours with Leinster and Ireland, and being named as a substitute for the Walker Cup. A highlight of John’s individual career was his wonderful run to the Semi-Finals of the Amateur Championship in 1981. John has also been fully committed to Sutton GC and was a member of winning Senior Cup and Barton Shield teams during the 1980s. In 2004 John followed in JB’s footsteps to become a member of Augusta and every year he runs the media centre at The Masters
        Picture
        JP Carroll
a larger than life character who featured on many international teams in the early 1950’s. Incredibly Jimmy was again selected on the international team after a ten year absence in 1962. HIs trophy cabinet includes Irish Amateur Close and both the South and East of Ireland titles, and his overall record with Sutton saw him playing on seven All Ireland winning teams
        Picture
        Willy Gill
Sutton’s second international he played for Ireland 13 times. He went on to be Honorary Secretary of the Golfing Union of Ireland I for many years before becoming President in 1969
        Picture
        Michael Fitzpatrick
A member of the great Sutton Senior Cup and Barton Shield teams of
the 1960’s, Michael won ten All Ireland medals including, latterly and in
partnership with his great friend Teddy Firth, one for the 1984 Jimmy Bruen Shield. A great administrator he became the Club’s second President of the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1983.
        Picture
        Catherine Booth
For most of her adult life Catherine demonstrated great commitment to service - both to and beyond Sutton Golf Club. In addition to being Lady Captain and Lady President of Sutton, Catherine held many senior positions in the Irish Ladies’ Golf Union (ILGU). In 2005 a great honour was conferred on the Club when Catherine was elected President of the Ladies Golf Union - the ruling body for women’s golf in Great Britain and Ireland. Catherine was only the fourth Irish woman to hold that esteemed office.
        Picture
        Michael Hanway
A senior irish international in both 1971 and 1974, Michael began his stellar golfing career by winning the inaugural Irish Boys Championship in 1966. In addition to his Irish caps he featured on Leinster teams in 1967 and then from 1971 to 1975. A qualified golf teacher, Michael helped a generation of young Sutton members to become fine players. He still features prominently in club competitions.
        Picture
        Paddy O’Boyle
Began his golfing life in Sutton featuring on many teams. Paddy went on to play for Ireland before taking up a career as a professional golfer, with his early roles including being an Assistant Professional to SGC Club Pro Nicky Lynch. Paddy then moved Bandon Golf Club in West Cork where he was Head Professional for many years before recently retiring.
        Picture
        Bill Thompson
A larger than life figure in Sutton for over 50 years, Bill was a fine golfer. He featured on many Sutton teams - including pennant-winning teams at Senior Cup and Barton Shield levels. Bill played for several years at Interprovincial level with Connacht. He was also Captain of Sutton GC on three occcasions in 1970, 1971 and 1991.
        Picture
        Teddy Firth
Teddy is generally recognised as one of the finest strikers of a golf ball ever seen in Sutton. He played interclub golf for Sutton over many years and was a serial winner. He was a member of three of our All Irieland Senior Cup winning teams, and also featured on All Ireland winning Sutton teams in the Mixed Foursomes and the Jimmy Bruen Shield. While unlucky not to be capped for Ireland Teddy was a regular for Leinster in the late 1950’s and the early 1960’s.
